Propagation Guide: How to Multiply Your Indoor Begonia Plants

Indoor begonia plants can be easily propagated through stem cuttings, which is a simple and effective way to multiply your plant collection. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to propagate indoor begonias:

1. Choose a healthy stem: Select a stem from your begonia plant that is about 4-6 inches long and has at least two or three sets of leaves. Make sure the stem is free from any disease or pest infestations.

2. Remove the lower leaves: Remove the lower leaves from the stem, leaving only the top few leaves intact. This will help reduce water loss during the propagation process.

3. Cut the stem: Using a sharp, clean pair of scissors or pruning shears, cut the stem just below a node (the point where a leaf is attached to the stem). Make sure the cut end is smooth and free from any jagged edges.

4. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone: Rooting hormone is a powder or gel that promotes root growth in cuttings. Dip the cut end of the stem into the rooting hormone, making sure it covers all sides of the cut end.

5. Plant the cutting: Plant the cutting in a well-draining potting mix, such as a mixture of peat moss and perlite. Make a hole in the soil with your finger and insert the cutting, making sure the top set of leaves are above the soil line. Gently press the soil around the cutting to secure it in place.

6. Water the cutting: Water the cutting thoroughly, allowing the water to drain out of the bottom of the pot. Place the pot in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight.

7. Maintain moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. You can cover the pot with a plastic bag or humidity dome to increase moisture levels if needed.

8. Wait for roots to form: It may take several weeks for roots to form on your begonia cutting. Once you notice new growth or when you can gently tug on the stem and feel resistance, your cutting is ready to be transplanted into its own pot.

9. Transplant the cutting: Carefully remove the cutting from its original pot and plant it in a slightly larger pot with fresh potting mix. Water thoroughly and continue to provide bright, indirect sunlight for optimal growth.
